Some 8km outside of Parys at Kopjeskraal Country Lodge, there are trails/tours that takes you to beautiful viewpoints on the first mountains created by the meteorite impact and the central impact area. From the top of these mountains you will be able to see the central impact area of the meteorite which is 90km wide to the south and east, as well as the central uplift area, or dome mountain land as it is called, of more or less 15km by 65 km to the north and west of the central impact area.
From the top of the mountains 360° unspoiled views of the Vredefort Dome Impact structure can be observed. The natural beauty of the dome mountain land and the views from there will be well worth the walk/drive to the top of the mountains. For those who do not wish to do all this distance, there is an easier way to view the central impact area from the koppie just next o the lodge. This koppie is easily accessed by people of all ages and gives a beautiful view of the Vredefort Dome Impact Structure.
The trails/tours can only be undertaken if accompanied by a Site Guide that will explain the different rock formations, bio-diversity, culture, history, fona and flora etc. of the area to you. On route you will find Granite outcrops, overturned hospital quartzite ridges, impact melt-related breccias like pseudo-tachylite and Vredefort granophyre as well as shatter cones and other rock formations. Different iron age settlements built with these rocks, dating back between 1650 and 1810, as well as the remains of a pioneer house dating back to the Groot Trek of the Voortrekkers in the 18th century and a heliograph station built by the British forces during the Anglo-Boer War is on route. Some valuable artifacts dating back to the late iron age were found near these archaeological sites. From the top of the mountains you will also have beautiful views of the towns of Parys and Vredefort as well as the Vaal river below.
